Paul Ryan subtweets Donald Trump in speech decrying 'ugliness' of 2016 race

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Paul Ryan subtweeted his party’s front-runner in a speech on Capitol Hill Wednesday morning, lamenting the 2016 presidential contest’s descent into ugliness, and urging for a return to civility.

Ryan’s speech sought to provide a hopeful message that a civil political discourse is possible, but urged the country to get out of “echo chambers” that prevented them from listening to ideas different from their own. That echo chamber is what Ryan blamed for the hyper-partisanship that’s come to define the presidential election.

In fact, Ryan’s speech did not mention any political figures or parties by name, including his party’s divisive front-runner Donald Trump. Read more…
