Harold Lester was a Texas-born showman who made his name in the UK, touring and changing up his act with the latest crazes, from trapeze to country music to science fiction spectacles
After Harold’s retirement in 1957, his younger brother Burton continued the shows, including the most prominent escapade, Lester’s Midget Circus, which featured up to 40 short-statured performers.
At one time, their ranks included 16-year-old Kenny Baker, who went on to achieve fame as R2-D2 in Star Wars
Here, performers dressed as Martians for the show “The Man in the Moon” spill out of the London Palladium and onto the streets, to the delight, befuddlement and terror of bystanders. Read more…
