'Agressive' telephone scammers prey on refugees in Canada

Canada’s thousands of newly arrived refugees and recent immigrants to the country are being targeted by telephone scammers in an extortion scheme, according to information from the country’s anti-fraud center.
Canadian police are warning recently resettled refugees and immigrants in the country to be wary of the scam, which has left some people swindled out of hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
According to Canadian news outlet CBC, investigators said the callers tell the victims something has changed with their immigration case and additional fees are required.
They follow up by asking for personal information like their home address and passport number, and then ask for money. Read more…
