Seven months ago, 17-year-old Yusra Mardini crammed on a flimsy rubber dinghy with two dozen other Syrian refugees to make the perilous journey from Turkey to Greece.
The boat was quickly taking on water, and she and her sister, who were both competitive swimmers, jumped into the water in hopes that it would lighten the load. Then they swam for their lives, eventually making it safely to the Greek shores.
“There were people who didn’t know how to swim and so we had to get into the water to help them,” Mardini said on Friday in Berlin, where she now lives. “It was a really tough experience.” Read more…
