'American Gods' nabs a 'Deadwood' vet to star, and Neil Gaiman is thrilled

When American Gods debuts on Starz, it’ll feature none other than Ian McShane — Deadwood‘s own Al Swearengen — in one of the key roles.

McShane is booked to star in the series as Mr. Wednesday, the Old God who takes it upon himself to rally similarly ancient deities for an epic confrontation. The story is adapted from Neil Gaiman’s fantasy novel, and the acclaimed author couldn’t be more pleased with the casting.

“When you write a beloved character (beloved with, or despite, or because of all his faults) like Mr. Wednesday, you get to watch the Internet trying to cast the role,” a statement from Gaiman reads. Read more…
