One of the world’s largest LGBT celebrations took over the streets of Sydney last night in a flurry of colour, booming speakers and sequins.
The 38th Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras saw a reported 300,000 people line the streets to watch around 170 floats associated with various clubs, causes, companies and political commentary make their way up Oxford Street in the inner city, along with more than 12,000 joyous marchers.
The annual march began on a Saturday in 1978, when supporters of gay rights filled the streets inspired by global Gay Solidarity Celebrations. At the time, they were met by a violent police response and 53 people were arrested. Read more…
